The Minister
The Rev. Matthew Sams is the minister at Willowdale Presbyterian Church. After working for 18 years in Information Technology, Matthew completed the Master of Divinity degree at Knox College (UofT) and was ordained in 2012.
In addition to serving as the minister and moderator at Willowdale, Matthew is:
- Chair of the Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations committee of the Presbyterian Church in Canada
- Director of The Presbyterian Church Building Corporation
- Member of the Ministry and Church Vocations steering committee
- Member of the Students and Education committee of the Presbytery of East Toronto
- and also works with local churches and organizations within the Willowdale community
Above all, Matthew wants you to know that there is nothing that can separate you from the love of God revealed to us in Jesus Christ.
What does The Minister do?
A minister in The Presbyterian Church:
- Prepares and leads worship
- listens and counsels people in questions of faith and living
- Encourages people in their own discovery of faith and learning to trust God
- Provides pastoral care to anyone in crisis or distress
- Celebrates the Sacraments of Baptism and Communion
- Conducts funerals and weddings
- Prepares and leads Bible studies and discussion groups
- Prepare and implement a vision for the congregation along with the elected elders (Session) of the church
